The northernmost of the three Baltic states is also the smallest. Its beauty, however, is second to none: Estonia’s spectacular beaches, romantic forests and picturesque rural towns are ideally complemented by the urban beauty of the capital Tallinn with its well-preserved medieval buildings, particularly its city wall (complete with walkway) and its towers which provide magnificent views over the ancient skyline – as do many of the town’s restaurants, located high above the medieval streets inside the old city walls. Tartu is Estonia’s second largest city and home to the country’s oldest university. The large number of students ensures the town’s vibrant and pulsating atmosphere.
Smaller coastal towns such as Haapsalu and Pärnu provide opportunities for rest and relaxation. They are also ideal starting points for an exploration of Estonia’s islands: Saaremaa, Hiiuma, Muhu and Vormsi provide the perfect scenery for long walks, cycling tours and seaside holidays.
