Płock is the oldest town in the Masovian region and one of the oldest towns in Poland. It was granted its city privileges charter as early as in 1237. The local cathedral is the burial place for two Polish kings – Władysław Herman and Bolesław Krzywousty (11th and 12th centuries). Since 1075 the town is the capital city for the whole diocese Płock. The town is beautifully situated on the high banks of the Vistula River, on which you may see the high cathedral towers and the castle from a long distance. Płock is situated on the Vistula River on lowlands in central Poland. The town is absolutely unique in Poland with its picturesque location on the high river banks, which in itself is a tourist attraction. The river bank in Płock has been for years a favourite object for painters and photographers and provides enormous opportunities for walks or bicycle tours. There are perfect conditions for sailing on the Vistula River. The place is also famous for its beautiful sunsets.
The Gothic Palace in Płock was till the end of the 15th century the residence of the dukes of Masovia. From this period you can see two Gothic Towers today: Noble Tower - once a prision for aristocrats and the Clock Tower with the remains of a romanesque building and a baroque roof.
Nowadays the old abbey of St. Michael, founded in 1180, is one of the oldest secondary schools of Poland. Colloquial the school is called
„Malachowianka“. There is a school museum in the lower basement of the medieval wing of the building. Here you can find relicts of romanesque and gothic architecture. Alumni of the schools are well-know individuals in Poland e.g. Ignancy Moscicki – first president of the 2nd republic of Poland and Tadeusz Mazowiecki – first president after the turnaround in 1989.
