1229 First record of the city of Wismar
1259 Wismar belongs to the Hanseatic League.
1370 Peace of Stralsund. Wismar flourishes during the period of the Hanseatic League.
1632 During the Thirty Years’ War Swedish troops expel the imperial garrison.
1648 At the end of the Thirty Years’ War, the “City and Domain of Wismar” passes to Sweden under the terms of the Treaty of Osnabrück.
1803 Wismar is returned to the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg under mortgage for 100 years.
1903 The Kingdom of Sweden waives redemption of the mortgage. Wismar is finally incorporated into the Duchy of Mecklenburg.
1945 The so-called Gothic Quarter with St. Mary’s at its heart is destroyed by the twelfth and last air raid of the Second World War.
1989/1990 Regime change in the GDR and reunification of Germany.
2002 Registration of the historic centres of Stralsund and Wismar as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
