Arising equally from the efforts of the German Foundation for Monument Protection, two European projects and a myriad of initiatives undertaken by individual members, today the European Route of Brick Gothic encompasses cities, regions and heritage sites overwhelmingly located in the southern Baltic region. In today's rapidly intergrating Europe, national borders play less of a role for the contemporary cultural tourist than for centuries. In consequence, marvellous destinations – both within Germany and outside the country – are now more accessible than ever to him or her.
The association is comprised of members conscious of the value, significance and the potential for cultural tourism to be found in their Brick Gothic heritage sites. These members have therefore decided to pool their resources in order to expand awareness of the cultural inheritance to be found at these sites amongst the broader public.
The purpose of the "European Route of Brick Gothic" association is the promotion of art, culture, scientific research, historical learning and understanding amongst nations and peoples. We are aiming to foster, develop and promote a sustainable form of cultural tourism along the route.
More specifically, our goals are:
- The maintainence and expansion of the European Route of Brick Gothic, set up to highlight the Baltic region's cultural history.
- The ascertainment, recognition and documentation of Brick Gothic heritage sites along the route.
- The presentation of the history of the European Brick Gothic style in its respective architectural, art and cultural historical contexts.
- The promotion of the European Route of Brick Gothic and its sites amongst the European public.
- The organisation and execution of informative events, projects and activities in the field of cultural history relating to European Brick Gothic.
- The conceptualisation and realisation of activities designed to further educate both our members and members of the public with an interest for European Brick Gothic.
- The development of publications relating to European Brick Gothic; the organisation of local, regional and international presentations about the theme; inclusion of citizens and stakeholders on site.
- The preparation and distribution of informative literature as well as liason with electronic media in relation to the subject of European Brick Gothic.
